Qualifications

  • Must be an incorporated business or sole proprietorship.
  • Must be registered to conduct business in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Must be in good standing with the Newfoundland and Labrador Registry of Companies and Deeds.
  • Must have an office or operation in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Must have a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the department confirming a qualified journeyperson on site in the appropriate trade.
  • Must be able to offer relevant work experience to the apprentice as required by the Institutional and Industrial Training Division.

  • Disqualifications:

    • Businesses not registered in Newfoundland and Labrador.
    • Businesses not in good standing with the Newfoundland and Labrador Registry of Companies and Deeds.
    • Businesses without a qualified journeyperson on site.
    • Businesses unable to provide relevant work experience to the apprentice.

This program offers your business a wage subsidy of 75%, up to a maximum of $14 an hour, for hiring apprentices. This means you can save on labor costs while providing valuable work experience to apprentices in their skilled trade.

You can use this subsidy for apprentices at any level—First, Second, Third, or Fourth year. This helps them progress towards their journeyperson certification. The subsidy is available for two levels of their apprenticeship training.

The money is paid directly to you, the employer, making it easier to manage payroll. This program is a great way to reduce your expenses while contributing to the development of skilled tradespeople in your industry.

Program Steps

  1. Register in LaMPSS:

    • Go to the Labour Market Program and Supports System (LaMPSS) website.
    • Click on "Register" to create an account.
    • Complete the registration process to receive your user ID and password.
  2. Prepare Necessary Documentation:

    • Ensure your business is in good standing with the Newfoundland and Labrador Registry of Companies and Deeds.
    • Have a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the department confirming a qualified journeyperson on site.
    • Gather the following documents:
      • Business registration details
      • Proof of office or operation in the province
      • Details of the qualified journeyperson
      • Relevant work experience outline for the apprentice
  3. Complete the Online Application:

    • Log in to LaMPSS using your user ID and password.
    • Navigate to the Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy (AWS) program application.
    • Fill out the required fields with accurate information about your business and the apprentice position.
  4. Submit the Application:

    • Review all entered information for accuracy.
    • Submit the application through the LaMPSS system.
