Type of Financing: Wage Subsidy

Repayment Terms and Interest Rates:

  • No repayment terms or interest rates. This is a subsidy, not a loan.

Eligible Expenses:

  • Up to 50% of a student’s salary, to a maximum of $5,000.
  • Up to 70% of a student’s salary, to a maximum of $7,000, for first-year students and under-represented groups including women in STEM, indigenous students, persons with disabilities, members of a visible minority, and newcomers.

Use of Funds:

  • Funds can be used to cover the cost of a student’s salary during their placement.

Ineligible Uses of Funds:

  • Funds cannot be used for any expenses other than the student’s salary.
  • The wages for the placement must not be funded by other Federal grants such as CIHR, NSERC, Canada Summer Jobs, or by another federally-funded program such as IRAP, Mitacs, etc.
  • Placements funded through a stipend, scholarship, and/or bursaries do not qualify.

Fees:

  • No fees are associated with this program.

Qualifications

  • Must be a biotechnology or healthcare organization, or the position must have a biotechnology or healthcare focus.
  • Must provide a full- or part-time work opportunity at a minimum of 10 hours/week, for a minimum of 4 weeks up to a maximum of 16 weeks.
  • The student placement must be over and above the organization’s baseline number of students previously hired.
  • The student must be added to the employer’s payroll, including Federal/Provincial tax deductions (CPP, EI, etc.).

  • Disqualifications:

    • Post-secondary institutions (universities, colleges, and polytechnics) as the employer of record.
    • Placements funded by other Federal grants such as CIHR, NSERC, Canada Summer Jobs, or by another federally-funded program such as IRAP, Mitacs, etc.
    • Placements funded through a stipend, scholarship, and/or bursaries.
    • Students hired as contractors.

Description

The Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) is designed to help your business by providing wage subsidies to hire students. You can receive up to $7,000 to cover a portion of a student's salary. This subsidy can cover 50% of the wage up to $5,000 for most students, and 70% up to $7,000 for first-year students and under-represented groups, such as women in STEM, Indigenous students, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and newcomers.

Program Steps

  1. Sign In/Create an Account:

    • Sign in to your BioTalent Canada user account.
    • If you do not have an account, create one on the BioTalent Canada website.
  2. Access the Application Portal:

    • Navigate to your dashboard.
    • Click on “My Applications” under Wage Subsidy Applications.
    • Click on the “Submit new wage subsidy application” button to start your application.
  3. Prepare Documentation:

    • Gather the necessary documentation, including:
      • Business registration details.
      • Financial statements.
      • Job description for the student placement.
      • Proof of the student’s enrollment in a Canadian post-secondary institution.
      • Student’s resume and cover letter.
      • Any previous records of student hires (if applicable).
  4. Complete the Application Form:

    • Fill out the online application form with details about your business and the student placement.
    • Provide information on how the placement aligns with biotechnology or healthcare focus.
  5. Submit the Application:

    • Review all the information and documentation.
    • Submit the completed application through the online portal.
  6. Wait for Confirmation:

    • You will receive an email notification if your application is placed on a waitlist.
    • If approved, you will be notified and provided with access to BioTalent Canada’s training programs.
