Eligible Expenses:

  • Tuition fees or instructional fees charged by the training provider.
  • Mandatory student fees.
  • Examination fees.

  • Other required materials directly relevant to the training course.
  • Eligible travel costs for participants and trainers (outside of Edmonton and Calgary) when training is over 100 km one way within Alberta for small and medium-sized organizations.

Ineligible Expenses:

  • Employee wages cannot be reimbursed through the grant.
  • Income support is not available for workers who are in grant-funded training.

Fees:

  • No fees are associated with the program.

Qualifications

  • Must be a private sector employer, including sole proprietors and partnerships.
  • Must be a non-profit sector employer.
  • Must be a First Nations or Metis Settlement.
  • Must be the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (if in a community with a population of 100,000 or less).
  • Must be Alberta Treasury Branches (if in a community with a population of 100,000 or less).
  • Must have current or potential employees who need training to fill current or future positions.
  • Eligible trainees must be employees (current or prospective) and one of the following:
    • Canadian citizens.
    • Permanent residents.
    • Protected people under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) who are entitled to work in Canada.
    • Business owners (incorporated, unincorporated, sole-proprietor, partnerships) with 4 or fewer employees, including all owners.
    • Family members employed with the applicant company for more than 3 months.
  • All eligible trainees must live in Alberta.

  • Disqualifications:

    • Company owners (includes shareholders of a corporation and any member of the employer's board or council) of businesses with more than 4 employees.
    • Family members who are not current employees.
    • Temporary Foreign Workers, or anyone temporarily working in Canada.

Description

This program offers your business a chance to get funding for employee training. You can receive up to $10,000 per employee each year for training costs. If you hire and train an unemployed Albertan, you can get up to $15,000 per trainee.

The government covers two-thirds of the training costs for your current employees. You only need to pay one-third. For unemployed trainees, the government can cover the full cost. This funding can be used for various training expenses, such as:

Program Steps

  1. Read the Applicant Guide: Start by reading the Canada-Alberta Job Grant Applicant Guide and Quick Reference Guide. This will give you a clear understanding of the program requirements and application process.

  2. Complete the Application: Go to the Canada-Alberta Job Grant Portal and complete the application for your trainees. Ensure you use the correct application form based on whether your trainees are employed or unemployed.

  3. Prepare Documentation: Gather the necessary documentation to support your application. You will need:

    • Business registration documents
    • Proof of training costs (e.g., invoices or quotes from training providers)
    • Trainee information (e.g., employment status, residency proof)
    • Training program details (e.g., course description, duration, and costs)
    • Any other documents specified in the Applicant Guide
  4. Submit the Application: Submit your completed application through the online portal. Make sure all required documents are attached and the application is filled out accurately. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

  5. Await Consent from Trainees: Ensure that all trainees have submitted their consent via email. Applications are not considered 'received' until all consents are submitted.

  6. Monitor Application Status: Use the CAJG portal to monitor the status of your application. Check for any updates or requests for additional information.

  7. Receive Payment: After your application is approved, follow these steps to receive payment:

    • Read the Training Completion Form Checklist.
    • Complete the Training Completion Application form on the CAJG portal.
    • If opting for interim reimbursement, contact the CAJG team with the reference number.
    • Submit the Training Completion form within 30 days of finishing the training.
  8. Provide Payment Information: For faster and secure payment, upload the Application for Electronic Payment along with a void cheque or bank-stamped form into the CAJG portal when submitting your Training Completion form.
