  • Fundraising activities, project evaluation, shareholder dividends, bonuses, or extraordinary compensation
  • Costs for training or assistance in preparing grants and contribution applications
  • Entertainment expenses not directly related to book or author promotion

Qualifications

  • Must be a Canadian-owned and Canadian-controlled organization or professional association, representing or related to the Canadian book publishing industry.
  • Must be incorporated under the laws of Canada or a province.
  • Canadian teaching institutions with a specialization in the book industry are eligible for funding of Professional Development projects.
  • Organizations that represent Canadian libraries may be eligible for projects that meet the objectives of the Canada Book Fund, but should contact the program before applying.

  • Disqualifications:

    • Projects that only benefit a single book publisher, Canadian-authored book, or an affiliated group of book publishers are not eligible.

Description

This program offers your business significant financial support. You can receive up to $2,000,000 per project per fiscal year if you are a not-for-profit organization, or up to $1,500,000 per project per fiscal year if you are another type of organization. Typically, the program covers 50% of eligible project expenses, but in some cases, it can cover up to 100% of eligible expenses.

The funds can be used for various projects that benefit the Canadian book industry. These include:

  • Marketing projects: Promote and showcase Canadian-authored books.
  • Technology projects: Improve efficiency and competitiveness through new technologies.
  • Professional development projects: Provide training and workshops to enhance skills.
  • Internship projects: Offer on-the-job training to develop future industry professionals.

For internships, the program can fund up to $15,000 of eligible expenses, or up to $22,500 if the intern is from an Indigenous community, an official-language minority community, a visible minority, or living with a print disability.

The funding can cover a wide range of expenses such as event production costs, marketing materials, consultation services, and technology equipment. This support can help your business grow, improve its operations, and reach a wider audience.

Program Steps

  1. Complete the Application Form: Fill out, sign, and date the Application Form provided by the program.

  2. Prepare Documentation: Gather the following required documents:

    • A detailed description of your project
    • A budget for your project (see Part E of the Application Form)
    • Your organization’s latest audited financial statements
  3. Attach Supporting Documents: Ensure all the required supporting documents are attached to your application. This includes the detailed project description, budget, and audited financial statements.

  4. Submit Your Application: Send your complete application package electronically via email to [email protected]. Make sure to submit it by 11:59 p.m. local time on the application deadline date.

  5. Acknowledge Receipt: You will receive an acknowledgment of your application within two weeks of submission.

  6. Await Evaluation: Your application will be reviewed for eligibility and then evaluated based on the program’s criteria. Be prepared for potential follow-up questions or requests for additional information.

  7. Receive Funding Decision: Once your application is evaluated, you will be informed of the funding decision. If approved, you will receive details on the funding amount and any conditions.

  8. Comply with Funding Conditions: If awarded funding, adhere to all conditions outlined in the funding agreement. This may include submitting interim reports and a final report upon project completion.

  9. Acknowledge Financial Assistance: Publicly acknowledge the financial support received from the Government of Canada in all communications materials and promotional activities, in both English and French.
