Eligible Expenses:

  • Ongoing costs to support your organization, including staffing.
  • Expenses related to artistic and/or cultural activities, such as:
    • Research, creation, production, and critical discourse.
    • Mentorships, artistic training, and community-based initiatives.
    • Language preservation and intergenerational transmission of artistic knowledge.
    • Development of administrative, artistic, cultural, or organizational capacity.
    • Local, regional, national, or international exhibitions.
    • Publishing activities, marketing, and publicity.
    • Presentations, festivals, showcase events, and networking events.

Ineligible Expenses:

  • Activities that receive funding from another Canada Council grant.
  • Activities listed on the general list of ineligible activities.

Qualifications

  • Must be a First Nations, Inuit, or Métis organization.
  • Must engage in contemporary, customary, or traditional artistic and cultural activities.
  • Must have completed at least 2 consecutive years of artistic or cultural activity.
  • Must have received core funding from the Canada Council, 1 composite grant or Long-Term Projects grant, or 2 Canada Council project grants in the last 5 years.
  • Must have a board of directors or an identified governance group with oversight and decision-making authority, made up of at least 60% First Nations, Inuit, or Métis individuals.

  • Category A:

    • Must have a mandate and primary activities concerned with artistic and/or cultural practice.
    • Must have artistic and/or cultural activities that are national and international in scope.
    • Must have been in continuous operation for at least 10 years.
    • Must have a total annual operating budget greater than $500,000, averaged over the last 3 years.
  • Category B:

    • Must have a mandate and primary activities concerned with artistic and/or cultural practice.
    • Must have artistic and/or cultural activities that are regional, national, and/or international in scope.
    • Must have been in continuous operation for at least 7 years.
    • Must have a total annual operating budget greater than $250,000, averaged over the last 3 years.
  • Category C:

    • Must have a mandate and primary activities concerned with artistic and/or cultural practice.
    • Must have been in continuous operation for at least 3 years.
    • For non-arts/cultures-specific organizations:
      • Must be a multi-faceted organization with regular and formalized artistic and/or cultural programming.
      • Must have ongoing artistic programming for at least 2 years.
  • Category D:

    • Must qualify as an Indigenous Arts Service Organization.
    • Must qualify as an Indigenous Publisher.
  • Disqualifications:

    • Organizations that receive funding from another Canada Council grant for the same activities.
    • Organizations that do not meet the specific criteria outlined for each category.

Program Steps

  2. Speak with a Program Officer: Contact a Creating, Knowing and Sharing program officer to discuss your application. This is a required step for first-time applicants.

  3. Prepare Documentation: Gather the necessary documents for your application. These typically include:

    • Financial statements for the past two years
    • Proof of core funding from the Canada Council or other qualifying grants
    • A detailed description of your organization's artistic or cultural activities
    • A list of your board of directors or governance group, ensuring at least 60% are First Nations, Inuit, or Métis individuals
  4. Complete the Application Form: Fill out the application form on the portal. Provide detailed information about your organization, including its history, mission, and the specific activities for which you are seeking funding.
