  • This is a conditional contribution, meaning it is not a loan and does not require repayment if conditions are met.

Eligible Expenses:

  • Labour costs spent in Northern Ontario
  • Production goods and services sourced from Northern Ontario
  • Post-production costs incurred in Northern Ontario

Ineligible Expenses:

  • Costs spent outside of Northern Ontario
  • Brokerage of goods and services from outside Northern Ontario by intermediaries
  • Operational expenses for a media company

Fees:

  • There are no fees associated with this program.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Canadian corporation which is Canadian controlled.
  • Must own all, or a majority of the rights necessary to exploit and produce the production.
  • Must receive a producer credit on the project.
  • Must provide evidence of the availability of all other project financing with terms and conditions satisfactory to the NOHFC, at the time of application.
  • Must have secured a written commitment letter from a qualified and experienced distributor or broadcaster, satisfactory to the NOHFC, at the time of application.

  • Disqualifications:

    • Unscripted media content, such as reality TV, live sports, news or improvisational comedy.
    • Advertisements, partisan content, fundraising videos, or industry videos not meant for broader consumption.
    • Productions containing excessive violence or sexually explicit content, that encourage hatred, intolerance, violence or criminal activity.
    • Costs spent outside of Northern Ontario.
    • Brokerage of goods and services from outside of Northern Ontario by intermediaries.
    • Operational expenses for a media company.

Description

This program offers your business a chance to receive significant financial support for film and television production in Northern Ontario. You can get up to 50% of eligible costs covered, with a maximum amount based on your total production budget:

  • Up to $500,000 for budgets up to $5 million
  • Up to $1,000,000 for budgets between $5 million and $10 million
  • Up to $2,000,000 for budgets over $10 million

The funds can be used for various production costs, including labour, production goods and services, and post-production costs. The key is that these expenses must be spent in Northern Ontario.

This program is a conditional contribution, meaning you don't have to pay it back as long as you meet the program's conditions. This financial support can help you create high-quality, original productions that showcase Northern Ontario's culture, geography, and talent.

Program Steps

  1. Create an Account: Visit the application portal and create an account by providing your first name, last name, user name, organization name, email, and password.

  2. Log In: Once your account is created, log in to access the application form.

  3. Complete the Application Form: Follow the onscreen instructions to fill out each section of the application form.

  4. Prepare Documentation: Gather and prepare the following documents:

    • Script or Screenplay
    • Project synopsis
    • Production schedule
    • Signed and dated production budget
    • Projected Northern Ontario expenditures (in the same format as the production budget)
    • Copies of applications or commitment letters from all other sources of production financing
    • Written commitment letter(s) from a distributor or broadcaster
    • Detailed marketing and distribution plan
    • National and international revenue projections
    • Detailed cast and crew list
    • Evidence of a complete and clear chain of title, including a complete description of the production's development history and all third-party agreements
  5. Upload Documentation: Upload the prepared documents to the application portal as required.

  6. Review and Submit: Carefully review your application and all uploaded documents to ensure completeness and accuracy. Once satisfied, click "Submit application."

  7. Await Response: After submission, you will hear back from the NOHFC within 2 to 4 weeks regarding the status of your application.
