Description

The Student Summer Skills Incentive (SKILL) program offers wage assistance to help your business hire post-secondary students for summer jobs. You can receive a subsidy of $10.50 per hour for each student you hire, or $11.50 per hour if the student is from a designated diversity group. This subsidy can cover up to 525 hours of work, making it easier for you to manage payroll costs.

This program is designed to benefit both your business and the students. By hiring students whose studies align with your needs—like a Computer Science student for IT tasks or a Business student for marketing—you gain valuable skills for your projects. If you hire a student in a Co-op or Work-Integrated Learning program, they can even earn course credit, which enhances their educational experience.

To qualify, you need to hire students for 8-14 weeks during the summer, ensuring they work at least 240 hours. This program not only helps you financially but also supports the development of the next generation of skilled workers.

Program Steps

  1. Create a LaMPSS Account or Sign In: Visit the LaMPSS portal and either create a new account or sign in if you already have one.

  2. Gather Required Documentation: Prepare the following documents:

    • Your charity number or active Society Act number.
    • A detailed description of your organization.
    • A breakdown of the tasks and time allocation for the position you want to fill.
    • Written confirmation from the educational program if hiring a Co-op or Work-Integrated Learning student.
  3. Complete the Online Application: Fill out the application form on the LaMPSS portal. Ensure you provide all necessary information about your organization and the position.

  4. Submit Separate Applications if Needed: If you plan to hire students in more than one county, submit a separate application for each county.

  5. Review and Submit: Double-check all information and documentation before submitting your application. Ensure that all details are accurate and complete.

  6. Wait for Approval: After submission, wait for the program administrators to review your application. They may contact you for additional information if needed.

  7. Receive Subsidy and Hire Student: Once approved, you will receive the wage subsidy. You can then proceed to hire the student for the summer job.
